Woke up in Austin the next morning feeling pretty giddy we’d pulled off it off such a relaxed and loose show in Dallas, in spite of what was very much a high pressure situation.  Had a show that night at the Central Presbyterian Church. Austin is always great, we’ve got friends there, and I hope someday I get to make a record in that town.  We finished every song with an amen, a joke we quickly rode into the ground, and then hung in there strong, till it got funny again. Encored in the balcony.  Been having a lot of fun playing in the opening band Yellowbirds every night too.  Peace be with you.

It’s been a busy fall. I just wrapped up a national tour with cellist Ben Sollee, and am back home in Brooklyn, unpacking, working on new music and playing in the studio.

In between all the touring, I somehow managed to build a 16′x30′ cedar shingle cabin with clean lines and lots of natural light, on my land up in Vermont. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my dad, who worked harder than most 20 year olds I know.

Guster heads back on the road in January. Looking forward to playing with the Dallas Symphony, and reuniting with our cellist and violinist friends, April and Charlene, who you may have seen on tour with us earlier this year. In addition to playing Guster songs, I’ll also be playing with the opening band Yellowbirds, whose music I love.

It’s a free “pass the bucket” kind of show, even though I’ll be paying my band weather the place is packed or empty.  What I can’t get across in a 140 character Tweet or Facebook post about tomorrow night, is just how much work and love it takes an artist like me to actually pull a “tomorrow night kind of show” off, which is why I’d like to write a bit about that here.

I grew up in a small town in Vermont, with a black and white TV.  My folks didn’t have a credit card till I was in college.  There were no national news papers to be found in our household.  I had no family contacts in the music business, let alone any business contacts what so ever when I first moved to Nashville to take a crack at going full time pro musician back in 1999, and neither my Mom or Dad had any real advice at making a career in music other than to work hard, be honest, stay away from dope, and not get anyone pregnant.

There’s so much background white noise nowadays, it’s no wonder everyone feels overwhelmed what with all the invitations to shows and events.  I don’t have a ironic Twitter voice, and my email invitations to friends and peers are pretty point blank, for better and for worse.  My sense of humor is an acquired taste as is, understood best by those who know me well.  I don’t spend that much time on Facebook, and most of what I care about happens in real time. In the past I’ve been gun shy about inviting people out, but none of that matters to me anymore.  I’m 33 for fucks sake.  Same age as Jesus.  The only thing I care about as much as music, is my health, my land, my family and my inner circle of friends.  So why hide it?

I want to thank in advance the musicians who I’m going to be sharing the stage with.

One of them (Sam Cohen) made one of my favorite albums last year (Yellowbirds), and another (Kenny Wollesen) has been my favorite  drummer for well over a decade, even though we only started playing together last year.  Chris Morrissey played bass on my number one record for all of 2006 and 2007 (Mason Jennings – Boneclouds) and the other I met in a shitty beer stained rock club in Des Moines Iowa back in 2008 as we both unpacked our pedal steels, and has since become one of my best friends (Max Hart).  These guys are a big part of the reason I moved to NYC.

Music is undervalued, almost as much as our general disconnect from the origin of most natural products we use on a daily basis, as well as family and art.  It’s true.  But that doesn’t change the way I feel about music, and how much I respect it, and want to make it, and have it in my life.

Tweedy and his family stopped by the Vic last night to see their friend Jeff Garlin before the show.  He was super easy to talk with, and it was cool to catch up a bit about the different projects we’re both working on, until it was time for us to hit.

Can’t say how happy I was to finally meet him having admired his work for so long.  Maybe we’ll collaborate on something together down the line.  I sure hope so.
